The Gaiwan: The Essential Vessel for Chinese Tea
The Gaiwan (盖碗) is arguably the most versatile and elegant vessel in Chinese tea culture. Translating directly to “lidded bowl,” a traditional Gaiwan consists of three parts: the saucer (representing earth), the bowl (representing humankind), and the lid (representing heaven). Together, they form the “Sancai” (Three Talents) bowl, a design that has been perfected over centuries.
Whether you are a seasoned tea master performing a Gongfu tea ceremony or a beginner looking for the most authentic way to taste a new loose-leaf tea, the Gaiwan is an indispensable tool.
How to Use a Gaiwan
One of the reasons tea enthusiasts love the Gaiwan is its incredible versatility. It can be used in two distinct ways:
-
As a Brewing Vessel (Gongfu Style): This is the most popular modern use. You place your tea leaves and hot water in the bowl, use the lid to hold back the leaves, and quickly decant the brewed tea into a Fairness Cup (Gong Dao Bei). The wide opening allows you to perfectly control the pour, observe the leaves expanding, and deeply inhale the aroma trapped on the underside of the lid.
-
As a Drinking Cup (Traditional Style): For teas that don’t easily over-steep, such as delicate green teas or white teas, you can brew and drink directly from the Gaiwan. Simply sip from the bowl, using the slightly tilted lid to gently brush the floating tea leaves away from your lips.
Explore Our Handcrafted Gaiwan Collection
Our collection ranges from highly portable 2.2oz travel sizes to generous 6.8oz bowls, ensuring the perfect fit for your hand and your brewing style.
Authentic Porcelain & Kiln Glazes
Porcelain is the traditional gold standard for Gaiwans because its non-porous surface will not absorb the flavor of your tea, making it perfect for tasting multiple different teas in one sitting. Explore our classic pure white porcelain, beautifully hand-painted Koi Fish and Crane motifs, or the breathtaking kiln transformations of our Ru Yao (crackle glaze) and Jun Kiln blue-green ceramics.
Modern Glass Tea Bowls
For visually stunning teas, a glass Gaiwan is a beautiful choice. Our collection features heat-resistant hammered glass, frosted finishes, and gold-trimmed edges. Glass allows you to watch the tea leaves dance and unfurl, making it especially wonderful for blooming teas or tightly rolled oolongs.
Rustic Clay & Wabi-Sabi Ceramics
If you prefer a more tactile, grounding tea experience, explore our rustic ceramic and clay Gaiwans. Featuring vintage bronze finishes, woven linen textures, and natural wood or lotus seed knobs, these pieces bring a calming, earthy aesthetic to your tea table.
Travel Gaiwans
Don’t leave your tea rituals at home. We offer compact, travel-friendly mini Gaiwans (2.2oz – 3.4oz) designed for tea lovers who want to brew traditional Gongfu tea at the office or while on the road.
Gaiwan vs. Teapot: Which is Better?
While teapots excel at retaining heat for darker teas, a Gaiwan is universally adaptable. Because it has a wide mouth, it dissipates heat faster, making it much safer for brewing delicate white and green teas that might “cook” and turn bitter inside a closed teapot. A Gaiwan is also much easier to clean and allows you to fully inspect the wet leaves after your session.
